Incorporating AI and Emerging Technologies in Engineering Practice

June 4, 2026 — 10:30 -11:45 a.m.

Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are rapidly reshaping the engineering and geoscience practices. While these technologies offer potential benefits in terms of productivity and quality improvement, their use in professional practice is not without risk. This presentation will provide foundational knowledge about AI-based tools and their use in professional engineering and geoscience. Topics include an overview of AI technology types, key characteristics such as trustworthiness, repeatability, privacy, and practical strategies for risk assessment and mitigation. Practice-oriented examples will ground the discussion in realistic scenarios relevant to professional engineering work. The presentation will draw from the speaker’s research and professional engineering experience working with emerging technologies, and from relevant guidance published by regulatory and technical authorities in this area. No prior background in AI or computer science is required.
