Navigating Leaves of Absence

Understanding Employee and Employer Responsibilities

June 7, 2023 — 10:30-11:45 a.m.

A welcoming workplace with good leave practices will attract, develop, and retain talented employees that organizations are looking for. APEGA’s Women in the Workplace report, published in 2021, shares that one of the top barriers that women face in the engineering and geoscience professions in Alberta is the lack of support for maternity and parental leave. Improving career transitions is crucial for retaining skilled and valued talent, especially when it comes to managing leaves of absences.

In this session, APEGA’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion team will explore how to manage different leave of absences by applying the information from the document released by Engineers Canada and Geoscientists Canada in 2016—Managing Transitions: Before, During, and After Leave—to different leave scenarios that occur in the workplace (such as parental and medical). The respective scenarios will demonstrate the different options available for supervisors, hiring managers, and human resources professionals regarding proactive practices and policies that will retain and support those who are considering a leave of absence, while still maintaining business continuity and productivity levels. For those professionals planning to take leave, the session will illustrate what they can do before, during, and after leaves of absences to help set the stage for a smooth transition period and encourage continued success in their organization.
