The Rules Nobody Gave You: Professional Communication in the Real World

June 4, 2026 — 1:30 -2:15 p.m.

Early-career professionals are often taught the written rules of professional practice (codes of ethics, policies, procedures, and technical standards), however, less attention is given to the unwritten rules that shape how work actually gets done inside organizations.

These unwritten rules influence when to speak up, how often to provide updates, how uncertainty should be communicated, and how mistakes are handled in practice. When students and members-in-training are unsure of these expectations, they may hesitate to ask questions, avoid difficult conversations, or disengage entirely, increasing professional and organizational risk.

This session focuses on professional communication as a core accountability practice. Using realistic early-career scenarios, participants will learn how to navigate both the written and unwritten rules of workplace environments, how to seek clarity without overstepping their roles, and how to remain engaged and accountable when expectations feel unclear.
