Öz Yilmaz, PhD
Engineering Seismology: Applications to Geotechnical Engineering, and Exploration of Earth Resources
Dr. Öz Yilmaz received his bachelor’s degree in geology with a geophysics option from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1970 and a master’s degree in geophysics with research in rock physics and earthquake seismology from Stanford University in 1972. After five years in the industry, Dr. Yilmaz received his doctorate in geophysics with research in exploration seismology from Stanford University in 1979.
Dr. Yilmaz has 49 years of experience in the oil and gas upstream industry for seismic exploration in Turkey, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He also has 21 years of experience in engineering seismology and earthquake seismology with Anatolian Geophysical, İstanbul, of which he is the founder.
In addition to numerous publications on all aspects of seismic data acquisition, processing, and inversion, Dr. Yilmaz wrote a book entitled Seismic Data Processing, published by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) in 1987, and updated with an expanded, two-volume second edition entitled Seismic Data Analysis, published by SEG in 2001. He also wrote Engineering Seismology, published by SEG in 2015, and Land Seismic Case Studies, published by SEG in 2021.
Dr. Yilmaz holds two US patents for seismic data analysis (i-stats image-based near-surface modelling and i-cube image-based subsurface imaging) and has received several honours, including the Maurice Ewing Medal.
