Saumya (Sam) Barua, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.), MBA

    Saumya (Sam) Barua, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.), MBASaumya (Sam) Barua, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.), MBA, is a professional engineer in Alberta and has practised engineering for 40 years in North America, South America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South Asia in the energy, construction, mining, and regulatory sectors.

    In Canada, he delivered several steam-assisted gravity drainage and engineering projects in Alberta’s oilsands for Suncor Energy, Syncrude, Shell, Husky Energy, and TransCanada before joining APEGA’s Compliance Department. A mechanical engineer, he has held key positions of Responsible Member and engineering manager for several global engineering companies while executing projects in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

    Barua spearheads the compliance function of APEGA, which ensures only APEGA registered members and companies with Permits to Practice can practise engineering and geoscience in Alberta. Over the past five years, he has developed the Compliance team, which resolves over 500 infractions annually to keep the public safe. Some of these infractions have been resolved at the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. The Compliance team also lends support to other APEGA departments, such as Professional Practice, Investigations, Examinations, and Regulatory Affairs.
    Barua is multilingual and has led multicultural project teams in several countries with great success. He is also a Distinguished Toastmaster and has been a public speaker and presenter in several conferences. He has supplemented his engineering experience with training in administrative justice, investigations, and adjudication, and he drives the complicated compliance cases through APEGA’s legal counsel.

    He is passionate about mentoring and volunteering. He is a past recipient of APEGA’s prestigious Outstanding Mentor Summit Award, and he holds an Engineers Canada Fellowship and a Geoscience Canada Honorary Fellowship for his contributions to the engineering and geoscience professions in Canada.
