    Sam Barua, P.Eng., FEC, MBASam Barua is a professional engineer in Alberta and has practised engineering for more than 38 years in North America, South America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South Asia in the energy, construction, and mining sectors. Over the past 15 years, Sam has delivered major projects in Alberta’s oil sands for Suncor Energy, Syncrude, Shell, Husky Energy, and TransCanada. A mechanical engineer by profession, Sam has held the positions of Responsible Member and engineering manager of global EPC companies like Jacobs, WSP, Amec Foster Wheeler, and SNC-Lavalin. Sam has led multidisciplinary engineering teams, approved the design of several major engineering projects in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan as a professional engineer, and has hands-on experience in offshore engineering. He is passionate about mentoring—he received APEGA’s prestigious Mentor of the Year Summit Award in 2015. More recently, he was awarded an Engineers Canada Fellowship and a Geoscience Canada Honorary Fellowship for his contributions to the engineering and geoscience professions in Canada. Sam currently spearheads APEGA’s Compliance department and is responsible for ensuring that only registered members and companies with a Permit to Practice can practise engineering and geoscience in Alberta as outlined in the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. As a member of APEGA’s Professional Practice Review Board, he has reviewed and provided his expert opinion on the Professional Practice Management Plans of engineering and geoscience companies. In any committee, Sam contributes from his unique experience as a professional engineer and a benevolent regulator. He is multilingual and has led multicultural project teams with great success in several countries. He is also a distinguished toastmaster and has been a public speaker and presenter at several conferences.
